  • Lack of privacy – Firstly, Microsoft will not use data stored within Office 365.  This belongs exclusively to the customer.  Collaboration on a file is user controlled, and the rights to the data remain solely with the customer.

Currently in Australia, Office 365 is on wave 15 and it was launched in 2011,  which means we are not guinea pigs. If you are using Gmail, BPOS or Microsoft Exchange Server, you definately should consider the Office 365.
  • Cost and reliability issues –  In terms of  office 365 migration, costs are comparatively low per user with Microsoft quoting around a $5.6 starting cost making it very competitive. There are also plans for Midsize Business or Enterprise. Reliability has been built in with a 99.9% S.L.A. which is financially backed.  365 service meets ISO 27001, HIPAA, BAA and FISMA regulations; with a disaster recovery policy also in place.
  • The product is not cost effective – This links with the previous point, in that the individual user cost is comparatively low.  Office 365 is scalable and therefore can be tailored to meet the needs of any business.

  • 365 cannot be used whilst off-line – Again, incorrect. 365 can be tailored to allow for off-line use and can sync, once reconnected to the internet meaning productivity is not affected by net access.
  • The product is complicated to use and administer – Office 365 is similar to server based software and requires no more set up time.  It allows companies to move over to cloud based alternatives at their own pace without excessive investment in new IT hardware.
  • Unsure about cloud technology – Cloud technology has been around since the 1950’s.  It is not new, though well tested.  Microsoft give excellent guarantees of service level, making it a safe,reliable option for all tiers of business.
  • There is a difficulty in changing platforms – Office 365 is essentially the same software, so a platform ‘change’ is unnecessary.  365 expands the usability of a well tried and tested product.
  • 365 is browser only based – Again. linked to a previous point.  365 can be used without a browser  with certain package options, it does not require permanent net access, syncing on demand.
  • 365 is only for the small business – Office 365 migration is not only for the small business.  As previously suggested, 365 is scalable and therefore suitable for all levels of business.

  • 365 will require a complete re-think of our IT infrastructure – IT infrastructure will be unaffected by office 365 migration.  It is a addition, not a replacement. With the file strorage, you will still need archive server to host those historical financial data or archive data. SharePoint is designed for host those data which can be collaborated and shared with others.
  • Little value addition – With Office productivity, Exchange, Lync, and SharePoint available to users throughout the company network, 365 is increases the opportunity for interaction, conversation and productivity.
